Elementary Camp Status — Camp is safe but the road to it is closed!
Dear Elementary Summer Camp families,
As you may have heard by now, there is a fire on the way to camp which has caused Highway 38 to be closed to all non-emergency personnel. The fire, called Valley Fire, started yesterday along Valley of the Falls drive and currently encompasses about 1,000 acres. Approximately 500 firefighting personnel and eight helicopters are working to contain the fire.
While the fire is on the other side of the Anderson and Shields Peaks (not near camp), the access to camp via Route 38 is currently closed. Heavy afternoon rains have really helped the firefighters and tentative word from our local sheriff says that they anticipate allowing parents up to camp tomorrow via Highway 330 (through Big Bear).
Please do not head up to camp tomorrow until you have confirmation on the road conditions. We will send out an email to all families by 8:30 Sunday morning with an update and potential alternate directions.
We are prepared for camp to start tomorrow. Janet James and her staff are busy cleaning all the cabins in preparation of your arrival. Geoff Anderla and the counselors are all meeting in Monte Vista Church going through their pre-camp training and the food has already been delivered to camp. So, send out good thoughts to all those hard-working firefighters that they get this fire under control and the road gets opened.
