Hwy 38 Closure…But Camp’s still OPEN!
Camp Update 9/30/25
Hello Campers!
Yes, we are all “happy” to still be in place and safe after our recent tropical storm. Thanks to many of you for your loving wishes sent to camp during and after the powerful rainstorm on Thursday, September 18, 2025. The thunderous storm stalled on the peaks above camp, and we were deluged for hours.
Due to the efforts of camp staff and volunteers after the El Dorado fire, our erosion control measures held (sand bags, trap bags, and straw bales), and most of the water flowed through camp and kept on going.
Highway 38 was not so lucky. The hwy sustained serious damage between Angelus Oaks and Jenks Lake West. Cal Trans has stated it will take many months to repair. We have access to camp through Big Bear via hwy 330 to Running Springs, then through Big Bear and on to hwy 38.

Staff have been out cleaning up the driveway, securing new sandbags where needed and correcting trail washouts. I am so grateful for our hardworking team of dedicated employees. Camp volunteer Teddi Boston, age 98, was helping to fill sandbags.
Camp had to cancel several retreats while we cleaned up the site and made it safe again, and we are working with these groups to reschedule. We expect to remain open for business this fall season and look forward to hosting Pine Con, Pride Camp, Daughters of Diana, Music in the Mountains, Thanksgiving Camp and several UU church retreats.
Our annual Bear Hug Campaign will launch in early November, so watch your mailbox for information, and please support the campaign. We will be matching a $100,000 gift, and the money will be used to help balance the budget as well as help pay for critical infrastructure projects.
And good news! The USFS finally approved our erosion control project on the water tank road. It has been under review for 6 years! So, we will be able to move ahead with improving the waterflow and erosion issues that have such a negative impact on cabins 1 and 3. This is a critical project to accomplish before winter.
For questions or comments, please email me at director@uucamp.org, and thanks again for all your love and support.
From the mountain top!
